As expected, «X-Men: Days of Future Past» leads the box office going into Memorial Day. In fact, it utterly dominated.

The new film totaled a whopping $90.7 million in its opening weekend. «X-Men» also totaled $171 million in global sale, bringing its total earnings to $261 million. «Godzilla» nor the other two 2014 Marvel comics flicks that topped the box office — «The Amazing Spider-Man 2» and «Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier» — have been able to crack the $100 million mark domestically, and «X-Men» is on its way to doing so by the end of Sunday (May 25).

«Days of Future Past» isn’t the greatest opening of the franchise, however. «X-Men: The Last Stand» totaled $102 million over three days when it opened for Memorial Day weekend. «The Last Stand» finished with $122 million over four days, which means «Days of Future Past» would need a big spike on Memorial Day to have the franchise’s best opening.

That’s nationally speaking, however. «Days of Future Past» has a franchise best in global sales and even beat «Avatar» — overall the highest grossing film of all time — in that department.

«Days of Future Past’s» biggest competitors didn’t fare so well. «Godzilla» opened to $93 million, but experienced a 67 percent drop in sales this weekend.

That’s no where as bad as how «Blended» performed. On top of critical bashing, Adam Sandler’s newest film barely topped the opening totals of 2012’s «That’s My Boy» with $14.2 million. The Wrap notes this is a little over half than what «Jack & Jill» totaled ($25 million). «50 First Dates,» another film starring Sandler and Drew Barrymore, totaled $39.8 million in its opening weekend.

Although its a successful weekend, the «X-Men» franchise will be pushing forward with its next installment. The upcoming «X-Men: Apocalypse» is expected to hit theaters next year.
