My Small Biz: Shop seeks flow of new and different

Joelle’s Card & Gift Boutique carries a variety of cards and unique gifts, always changing them up to keep things new.

We just added the largest selection of Melissa & Doug toys in Atlantic County.

We also do invitations, and we take 20 percent off the book price of personalized invitations.

We also just added the Gary Rosenthal collection of Judaic items, which includes handmade mezuzahs, menorahs and frames. We have beautiful Lampe Berger lamps and oils, which are very popular. We also just brought in Allen Designs ceramic clocks. We have HeartStrings items such as jewelry, robes, slippers, glasses and serving trays that can be personalized and ready in 48 hours.

Our expansive selection of greeting cards includes Papyrus, Recycle, Design Design, Marian Heath, Sellers and Dolly Mama. And we carry Crane stationery. It’s amazing how many Papyrus cards I sell. The girl has to come in every two weeks to refill the section.

We also offer children’s books, and we carry an array of spinners and chimes, and Lolita wine glasses.

The Lampe Berger lamps, which clean the air, kill bacteria and leave a lovely scent, are popular as gifts. Others come here for Deco Breeze fans, which come in many forms: a parrot on a perch, a crab that sits on the counter, a cute little kitty, an owl. For the spring I’m getting a round fan with little feet.

The biggest challenge is keeping on top of what’s new and anticipating what people are going to like.

What I love about it is I meet new people all the time, very nice people, and it’s a very pleasant atmosphere.

Entry: I’ve done graphic arts all my life. The field kind of dwindled down to nothing.

This opportunity came up, and years ago I worked for the Fabers when the shop was called Fabers. We talked with Mrs. Faber about it, and she gave me ideas on how to shop and buy things. I decided to make a go of it.

My husband, Bob, does all our book work and comes in on the weekends. He works full time elsewhere.

The future: We’re going to build on what we have and keep bringing in new things for people to come and see. Staying on top of that is enough.
